What is Flamenco?
1. Flamenco is an art originating in the south of Spain which is
displayed in three forms: cante, dancing and guitar. The origins are found in
the popular songs and dances which existed historically in Andalusia, with
influences of races and cultures such as those of the gypsies, Arabs, Jews...
Flamenco is the great universal art as far as feelings are concerned.
Ivette Vázquez, Mexico
2. Flamenco is a genre coming mainly from a way of life, under
specific historical vicissitudes and in a specific region of Spain; that of
Andalusia. This coexistence of different popular classes, mixture of rituals and
the acquisition of traditions determined a different musical form, not
exclusively belonging to the gypsy race, which the romantic movement in Spain
unintentionally saw to magnifying. Starting in the first half of the 19th
century, flamenco is distinguished as an autonomous art in its three most
remarkable facets: cante, dancing and guitar.
Rafael Chaves, Spain
3. Flamenco is mainly musical artistic expression, around which
cultural expression emerges, around what is Andalusian, with a certain
foppishness and roguishness at the same time. The musical variety is enormous,
since different forms emerge from a few families. Flamenco is moreover a
permeable kind of music, which has readapted itself to the evolution of music
and the influences of other genres.
Jorge, Spain

If you’re thinking, I’m too old to start this now. Not so. Most of the students begin studying flamenco as adults and quickly become hooked on this art form which they might not have known a lot about before.
